You may have wondered what is detoxing. Detoxification is body’s natural process of getting rid of unwanted materials and toxins. Same way you take shower or clean your teeth daily so that you look and smell clean. Similarly, detoxification should be done as internal cleansing.

Your body is one very intelligent machine, evolved over thousands of years. Even though detoxing is natural process, you can support it by decreasing the amount of toxins and providing supplements it needs to function properly. We need hundreds of vitamins, enzymes and other molecules to help rid the body of unwanted waste products and chemicals.

What is Under the Hood?

As you may know the liver is the major organ involved in many processes of detoxification including the removal of toxins from the blood and destroying large amounts of chemicals and bacteria.

Although the liver is the main organ for dealing with toxic bodily conditions, it does not mean that it is the only one. There are three major portals through which harmful agents gain entry into our tissues.

The first portal is the respiratory system where oxygen enters the body and then exits, in the form of carbon dioxide, a waste product.

The second portal is the digestive system. This system processes food we’ve eaten, then absorbs it into the circulatory to be used.

The third portal is the skin, providing a barrier against external pollution.


Is Your Internal Cleansing Mechanism Functioning Well?

It’s often difficult to know when your internal cleansing mechanisms are not functioning well. Compared to other parts of the body, it is hard to know, for example, when your liver is working or not.

If there are excess toxins in your body that cannot handle, those toxins will be stored in your body. Toxicity can have wide range of effects, signs can be: skin rashes, joint pain, cardiovascular diseases, chronic fatigue, constipation, diabetes, diarrhea, fibromyalgia, headaches, hormone imbalance, neurologic disorders and overweight.

As you can see that effective detoxification system is necessary for good health.

Body’s Major Detoxification Systems

Humans have two major systems for eliminating toxins from the body: xenobiotic detoxification and antioxidant detoxification.

The first system, xenobiotic detoxification, disarms health threatening chemicals and metals from food, water and air. During this process of detoxification, the body metabolizes or changes toxins to a less dangerous form (Phase I) and converts them to a water-soluble state (Phase II), so that body can effectively eliminate them.


The second system, antioxidant detoxification, involves deactivating or destroying free radicals. Free radicals can be thought of as very unstable electric charges that if not properly controlled can set up extremely serious toxic conditions within the body.

Free radicals can be generated by environmental factors such as exposure to cigarette smoke and other pollutants, inflammation from heavy exercise or physical work and the intake of too many calories. Free radicals rob electrons from healthy tissue creating potentially serious damage at the cellular level.

Fortunately, free radicals can be destroyed with antioxidants and phytochemicals with antioxidant properties. Our body produce many chemicals with antioxidizing activity against free radicals. The benefits from are so clear that you may want add some antioxidant supplements to your diet.

Antioxidant activity keeps free radicals in check, it also gives support to Xenobiotic Phase I and II further improving the overall detoxification process. The xenobiotic and the antioxidant detoxification systems work together to decreasing the burden from toxins and free radicals allowing us to live longer and healthier lives.

    1. Thanks Vince. Very true that there are much toxins in different forms. Managing those toxins is the to better health.

      Concerning EMF pollution I would try to limit exposure if you are extra sensitive to EMF.

  4. Very informative article! Detoxifying the body and mind is essential to be fully operative in daily routines. Specifically, I love consuming anti-oxidants through my diet and natural supplements. I really find this clears my mind and body from the free-radicals allowing me to perform daily activities more efficiently as well as elevating my spirits!
